They believe it plays a role in mood, appetite, sleep, memory, sexual desire, and other behaviors. Dopamine affects the brain’s pleasure centers thus playing a major role in addiction. It affects pain and pleasure, movement, and emotional response.

Understanding serotonin and dopamine activity helps the physician understand behaviors that may be contributing to the drug or alcohol abuse. This is important for both doctor and patient to understand in order to create an effective recovery plan unique to that patient.
