The short-term methods mostly continue for 6 months and include medication therapy, residential therapy and drug-free outpatient therapy. Outpatient drug-free treatment is designed for those who lead stable lives but have brief addiction histories. Medication is not given to these patients, but regular counseling sessions are held at clinics. Therapeutic communities are meant for those who have seriously impaired system owing to the prolonged effects of drug abuse. These patients are kept in a house for 6 months to 1 year under rigorous supervision and medication.

Methadone maintenance programs are effective methods to deal with patients dependent on opiate. Depending on the level of substance dependency a patient is involved with, the methadone doses vary. Along with methadone, medical treatments, therapy and counseling are also given under this method.
