Amanda Burgess-Proctor, sociology professor – My name is Amanda Burgess-Proctor, I’m an assistant professor here in the Sociology Department at Oakland University. I’m in my third year here at OU and I’m a criminologist by training, my degree is in criminal justice from Michigan State University. I teach a course here at OU, SOC-300: Alcohol, Drugs & Society. And in this class we look at a series of drug policies designed to address the substance abuse problem in the US And in this course we answer questions like whether or not marijuana is actually more dangerous than cocaine or methamphetamine. Many students are surprised to learn that per the federal government, marijuana as classified as a more dangerous substance than either cocaine or methamphetamine. One of the important topics that we consider in this class is medical marijuana. This is a particularly timely issue for us to discuss as the federal law prohibiting prescription or use of marijuana under any circumstances is in conflict with an increasing number of state laws that authorize medical marijuana use. This is a topic that is relevant and with which students often have a lot of engagement because the more states pass these medical marijuana laws, the more we have to deal with the inherent conflict of state law with federal policy.
