Simply because drugs affect your brain, and your brain controlles your whole body, so literally every part and system can be affected by withdrawl, but usually with weaker drugs, it doesent take so long, for crack or heroin, i’d go to the hospital and ween of with medication.
It takes so much courage, simply because druggies for the first while can;t function well without it,

I think that addictions come from holding on to negative emotions and things like, anger, judgment, resentment, FEAR, you name it if it is negative it will hinder the SOUL, we are here to LOVE and be love( but sometimes we don’t get the same love back) and that is ok!!, Learn to endure it the answer is simple, you may think it is stupid what I am saying, but believe me I’ve seen this over and over, once the person let go of all those resentments, life is what it should be, for instance if parents were not loving toward you when you were a child, if they are very critical of you in your teen age years, and if you hate them for how they treated you, then the teachers, then your friends ans so on and so on, one thing leads to another until you hurt so much that the only way to take it away is to NUMB your self, I call it “numbing” the pain with anything that takes away your pain or anger or resentment, but if you see it for what it is( their problem not yours) as long as you can separate and look at the people that hurt you without resentment , then life takes a different meanning, forget about the people that let you down, see them for what they are ” human” ( make mistakes) you just someone that they focus on, accept it for what it is, and don’t let it hurt you any more or anger you, if you don’t hold resentments you will see a change in you and the addictions go away, slowly but surely you will begin to see a change in you, try the GOLDEN RULE, seek the answer find out for yourself and you will find PEACE.
