Is There Long Term (Government Funded) Housing Facilities for Bipolar Patients?

Question by Help: Is there long term (government funded) housing facilities for bipolar patients?
My adult sister has bipolar disorder with a very bad temper. She has lived on her own with her children until recently, she stopped taking her medication and unraveled. For whatever reason she gave up her apartment she had with section 8 and forced her way into her babies fathers home. She lived there for about 3 months until she was arrested for domestic abuse. The landlord found out and evicted both of them. My parents took in her two sons while she was living in hotels and looking for another place to live. Every apartment she has found she has made an excuse for her not wanting to live there. My parents kept giving her money for the hotels until they found out she was spending the money on unnecessary things. She has been offered help by a mental facility, they informed her she can live in their housing with them and she will be treated but she has to pay a certain amount per month and she refused their help. She has now moved in with my parents and is causing severe stress on them, she has a very short, very bad temper and they are afraid of her doing them or her children harm. She has hit my mother in the past. We have looked for apartments for her and offered to pay half of the rent but she refuses all of our help. She keeps mentioning that she wants to move into a halfway house with treatment but she refuses to pay anything. I have looked for government housing for her but all that I have found are housing for patients with drug abuse and mental disorders all in one. My sister does not abuse any drugs. If anyone can help and point us in the right direction of a sober housing facility that is long term in southern California (preferably government funded) we will very much appreciate it, we can only afford to pay $ 400.00 or less a month. Thank you very much for your time and help.

I forgot to mention, she is on disability. She can not hold down a job. She has not worked for over 15 years.

In the UK they do.
Unfortunately I do not about USAs mental health system all too well.
It is not good she has refused help in the past.
I doubt she can get anything free.
This is not fair on anyone at the moment.
She needs to be careful she doesnt cause an incident which may land her in hospital or have her children taken away.

I wish you the best and hope she gets the help she needs.
Talk about that housing option she has to pay for again, I am sure rent will be substantially reduced.

I would always speak to a charity or an independent health worker in a situation like this (unless you have any doctor or nurse friends).

Section 8 housing and also rented accommodation. I am not sure what else should be expected for her. I am sorry.

How much does she get from disability? Has she applied for welfare? If she applies for herself and her children, she would get enough money to afford for her share of a halfway house w/treatment. Your parents would pay $ 400 and she would pay the rest.

I dont know why it has even come to this. Has she seen a dr. about this? There are good meds for bipolar. Maybe she also needs anti depression, since she has problems with temper and anger.

The brain is a very complicated and delicate thing. It can get messed up and be unable to produce any or enough serotonin. This is called a chemical imbalance which is easily treated, very common and nothing to be ashamed of.

It can cause depression, anxiety, panic, obsession, self harm/self hatred, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders, sleeping problems, aggression/rage, anger, phobias, fears, helplessness, hopelessness, hypochondria, ADHD, paranoia, OCD, headaches, lack of interest in things, lack of motivation/ focus and much more.

According to those who have gone to therapists, counseling and therapy dont help much. They are not even allowed to prescribe appropriate meds to help you get better.

Tell a dr. about all this and ask him for anti-depressants. Zoloft/Sertraline is a good one; most people thrive on it and it has no side effects. It enables the brain to function property. With antidepressants, you will be much better, happier, calmer, confident, relaxed and feel normal. What a difference it makes!!

Continue taking meds even when she feels better. She needs them, so she should stay on them.

If she goes into a treatment center or halfway house or whatever and your parents have the children, your parents should apply for welfare on behalf of the kids. Or maybe even S.S. on behalf of the kids.
