How to Stop Drug Dealers in Oakland? There’s Not Enough Police, the City Is Broke, and Drug Dealers Use Kids?
Question by OaklandSucks: How to stop drug dealers in Oakland? There’s not enough police, the city is broke, and drug dealers use kids?
Literally, there are drug dealers on just bout every corner in the “flat lands” of Oakland. Because of the serious gang wars and murders associated with drugs and other illegal activity, the understaffed police force has little ability to address a constant stream of street dealers. It’s true that if one dealer is arrested, another takes their place, often even on the same day. There’s a neighborhood watch that helps a bit, but there have been drugs on both corners of my street for the last 5 years. I’m sure it went on much before that as well, probably 20 years.
Why did I move here? I made a naive decision. I trusted the people telling me that the neighborhood was improving quickly – and it was. But then it took a downturn just after I bought the place – I guess the problem must be me! And it was “East Oakland”, which is certainly worse than where I live – just a few blocks from Emeryville, CA. Emeryville is trendy town, and home of Pixar. How can there be dealers on every corner just 8 blocks away from the place that created all those great films? What a tragedy.
Hi, thanks everyone for answers. Yes, I agree, legalization is the best option – but that’s not going to happen any time soon.
The dealers around here sell everything from weed to heroin.
I have been active in a neighborhood watch, and made hundreds of calls to the police, the drug unit of the OPD, and even a few calls to the DEA. The DEA isn’t concerned with small time street dealers.
Oakland is broke, don’t take my word for it, here’s an example:

Oakland doesn’t have enough cops. Don’t take my word for it:

And what do you know, the OPD had to cut the gang task force this year because there’s not enough money to hire enough cops:

Thanks again everyone, please send me practical suggestions – I do not have the power to legalize drugs! 🙂
